Winston Salem State announced Corey Thompson as its new men’s basketball coach
Thompson is a familiar name to WSSU faithful, as he played for the Rams from 1998-2002 under one of the most successful coaches in program history, the late Rick Duckett who won CIAA Championships in his brief time at Winston Salem. He helped bring the Rams a quartet of consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, two trips to the Sweet 16, and back-to-back CIAA conference titles.
“Returning home to WSSU fills me with great pride and honor,” said Thompson. “I am dedicated to upholding and protecting the legacy built by the incredible teams of the past and present. Having once walked the same paths as the young men I now have the privilege to lead, I am committed to motivating and supporting them just as I was supported over twenty-two years ago. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the administration, students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community. Dreams do come true! Ramily, Let’s Go!”
Coach Thompson was previously the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at St. Paul’s High School, where he won four consecutive conference championships. His St. Paul’s teams made eight consecutive playoff appearances.
Thompson served as Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Fayetteville State University. He served in the same position from 2006-11 at UNC Pembroke and he was a volunteer assistant coach at WSSU from 2004-2005.
